Un proiect care personal imi place f mult... ascultasem doar Compay Segundo si Cesaria Evora inainte... Proiectul se vrea ceva gen o mixtura de Latino Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Modern Son...
Exista si-un film despre, tot "Buena Vista Social Club" se numeste... nu l-am vazut, dar o sa-l mai caut.

Less a band than an assemblage of some of Cuba's most renowned musical forces, Buena Vista Social Club's origins lie with noted American guitarist Ry Cooder, who in 1996 traveled to Havana to seek out a number of legendary local musicians whose performing careers largely ended decades earlier with the rise of Fidel Castro. Recruiting the long-forgotten likes of singer Ibrahim Ferrer (RIP), guitarists/singers Compay Segundo (RIP) and Eliades Ochoa, and pianist Rub?Šn Gonz??lez, Cooder entered Havana's Egrem Studios to record the album Buena Vista Social Club; the project was an unexpected commercial and critical smash, earning a Grammy and becoming the best-selling release of Cooder's long career. In 1998 he returned to Havana with percussionist son Joaquim to record a solo LP with Ferrar; the sessions were captured on film by director Wim Wenders, who also documented sell-out Buena Vista Social Club live performances in Amsterdam and New York City. Teodora Enache - Biografie

Teodora Enache s-a născut ?®n 30 septembrie 1967, la Oneşti şi este licenţiată ?®n matematică la 'Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza' din Iaşi. A urmat şi cursuri de canto la 'Academia de Muzică' din Iaşi, şi studii de canto, improvizaţie şi armonie cu Johnny Răducanu şi Edmond Deda, dar şi cursurile 'Rhythm And Bongos' cu Maurice de Martin.


Debutul ei a avut loc ?®n anul 1993, odată cu 'Festivalul de Jazz' de la Sibiu, ?®ncununat cu premiul pentru debut. Au urmat apoi Festivalurile de Jazz de la Bucureşti, Braşov, Iaşi, Timişoara. ???n 1995, c?®ntă la Constanţa cu pianistul american de origine rom??nă Iancsy K?¶r?¶ssy. ???n 1997, participă la Moscova la 'Jazz Festival', dar şi la 'Contemporary Music Festival' ?®n Bucureşti şi Braşov, ca apoi să plece ?®n Germania unde apare live la 'Frankfurt Palais Jalta' şi 'Leipziger Buchmesse'. Seria de concerte de peste hotare continuă cu Italia unde, ?®n 1998, la 'Jazz Festival' din Milano, c?®ntă cu Guido Manusardi - pian, Lucio Canetti - bass şi Luigi Bonafe - tobe, iar ?®n 1999 la 'Jazz Festival', din Valtelina este acompaniată de Johnny Răducanu - pian, Alin Constantiu - clarinet, Jean Stoian - chitară şi Tuddy Zaharescu - tobe.

Revine ?®n ţară pentru un concert cu pianistul american Valentin Radu ('Bridge Over Trouble Water' - simfonic jazz) şi c?®teva concerte de club (Lăptăria lui Enache, Art Jazz Club şi Green Hours Club), ?®n formula Johnny Răducanu & Friends, ca apoi suita de turnee internaţionale să continue. ???n 2000, urmează 'Roof Garden Recital' la Roma cu Johnny Răducanu la pian, iar ?®n Franţa, 'Jazz In Marciac Festival', acompaniată de Eric Legnini - pian, Oliver Temime - saxofon, Fabien Marcoz - bass şi Jacques Pierre Arnaud - tobe. Tot ?®n 2000, dar de data această ?®n Germania, c?®ntă la 'Menden a la Carte Festival', cu Lucian Maxim - tobe şi Marius Mihalache la ţambal, iar la Roma, la 'Villa Celimontane', cu Johnny Răducanu la pian. Onorează şi 'Zuercher Jazz Festival', din Z??rich, unde c?®ntă ?®mpreună cu Johnny Răducanu la pian, iar la 'Menden Jazz Festival' din Germania, ?®n anul 2001, face ethno jazz cu Pedro Negrescu - bass şi Lucian Maxim la tobe. Urmează 'Szolnok Jazz Festival', ?®n Ungaria ?®n duo cu Jean Stoian la chitară.



???n decembrie este invitată cu Johnny Răducanu ?®n USA pentru o suită de concerte (Biscuits & Blues Jazz Club, San Francisco; Astor Club, Las Vegas; Goddard Chapel, Boston; Pulse Club şi Romanian Cultural Centre din New York).



Premiile care i-au răsplătit talentul au fost cele de la Festivalurile Internaţionale de Jazz de la Cluj, Mendem (Germania) şi Szolnok (Ungaria). De asemenea, revista franceză 'Jazz Hot' publică o elogioasă cronică la apariţia albumului său 'Meaning Of Blue' şi un articol special dedicat personalităţii muzicale a Teodorei Enache, ?®n numărul din februarie 2002.


???n 2002, cu ocazia Festivalului de Jazz din Bucureşti, apare alături de Johnny Răducanu. Şi tot ?®n acest an ?®i apar albumele 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street', 'Jazz Made in Romania - Live in San Francisco' şi 'Rădăcini'. Alte proiecte muzicale ale anului 2002 au mai fost şi 'Etno- Jazz Maria Tănase' şi 'Viaţa la Bisquits and Blues' ??€â€? San Francisco.

Vlaicu Golcea

Inainte de a fi alternativ, sau underground, Vlaicu Golcea se prezinta ca un om complet, muzician dedicat sunetului si perfectiunii acestuia. Asculta-l in cele mai neasteptate proiecte si colaborari. Asculta-i emisiunea pentru a descoperii influentele. Invata sa asculti muzica asa cum este ea, mereu reinventata.
Dupa absolvirea studiilor la Universitatea de Muzica Bucuresti, Vlaicu Golcea, s-a consacrat destul de rapid, mai exact, odata cu lansarea pe piata romaneasca a unui prim album de muzica, inregistrat live itnr-un club(mai exact, Green Hours). A inceput cu Jazz Unit(Eddie Neuman,Adrian Stefanescu, Vadim Tichisan, Eugen Nichiteanu, Lucian Ban)


Dintre proiectele personale amintim
- Lider si aranjor al grupului " The Rebop Factory " - cu Maria Raducanu (voce), ce propune o noua abordare a mainstream-ului
- Lider si aranjor al grupului " The Underground Acid " (Sorin Romanescu, Cristian Stefanescu-chitara, Mihai Iordache-alto saxofon, Catalin Milea-tenor saxofon, Vlad Popescu-tobe, Doru Klein, Cezar Stanciulescu si Mara-voci) grup ce propune o mixtura de funk, jazz si hip-hop
- Component al trio-ului Soleanu / Golcea / Popescu, trio ce propune piese originale semnate Vlaicu Golcea (proiect prezentat la Festivalul de Jazz, Bucuresti 2001 si la Festivalul de Jazz, Brasov 2001 ambele concerte avandu-l ca invitat pe trompetistul polonez Jerzy Malek)



- Formula Vlaicu Golcea, Sorin Romanescu si Maria Raducanu a fost un proiect de succes. Albumul "Pe Vale" fiind declarat ca cel mai bun produs jazz al anului 2003 De altfel in aceasta forma au sustinut foarte multe concerte(International Jazz Festival Bucharest 2002, Music Celebration Festival Bucharest 2002, French Cultural Center Iasi & Cluj)

- Suita de Craciun (Marta Hristea, Rudy Teianu, Maria Raducanu-voci, Sorin Romanescu-chitara, Vlad Popescu-percutie) propunand colinde traditionale romanesti intr-o alta viziune stilistica.
- The Wonderful World Of Disney Songs (Marta Hristea, Rudy Teianu-voci, Sorin Romanescu-chitara, Vadim Tichisan-tobe, percutie
- Human Instalation - autor al muzicii si performer in aceasta instalatie coregrafica (coregrafia apartinand lui Florin Fieroiu)
- Take Five (coautor Sorin Romanescu) muzica de balet
- muzica spectacolului Doi tineri din Verona de W. Shakespeare in regia lui Cristi Juncu

1998 il gaseste in exact aceeasi formula, Jazz Unit participand la Festivalul Napocensis si la Festivalul Muzicii Universitare din Franta. Cel de-al doilea album Jazz Unit - "From Now on.." este premiat de revista Actualitatea Muzicala. Album precedat de un turneu prin toata Romania.

Fondeaza alaturi de Marta Hristea (voce) si Sorin Romanescu (chitara) grupul East Village??€? cu care apare pe scenele de club si inregistreaza. Este prezent in formula de trio alaturi de Maria Raducanu si Sorin Romanescu la Festivalul de Jazz, Bucuresti 2002.

Din 2003 se intampla Aievea. Martea Hristea(voce), Raul Kusak(Hammond, Moog si sintetizator, Sorin Romanescu(chitara), Vlaicu Golcea(contra bas), Electric Brother(chitara si drum programming) si Matze(sampler sequencer)



Aievea

Un mare succes, multe aparitii, atat in tara cat si afara, si premii. Despre Aievea se scria in suplimentul ziarului Cotidianul:"Desi adopta cateva dintre procedeele tipice pentru chill-out, nu e genul de halucinatie pe care ar produce-o un om singur cu computerul lui. Muzicienii interactioneaza, iar vocabularul melodic este, in mare parte, cel al jazzului, atunci cand nu cocheteaza cu alte traditii."

Dintre proiectele importante mai specificam NoBo. O forma de jazz electro care interactioneaza cu imaginea. Cu acest proiect au fost sustinute concerte atat la Festivalul de Jazz din Bucuresti in 2004, dar si la festu de jazz din Franta. CIOT este numele sub care au fost compuse ceva muzici usor traditionale intr-o noua viziune, imaginatie Vlaicu Golcea, voce Marta Hristea.

Lansat in Franta prin bunavointa Centrului Cultural Francez, albumul "Pentru Nichita" este asteptat sa apara si in Romania. Pentru mai multe, viziteaza si www.vlaicugolcea.ro

Interviu, Vlaicu Golcea
Implicat in mai multe proiecte, cu diferite aparitii in aceasta perioada atat la TMBase dar si la Festivalul International de Jazz, Vlaicu Golcea a reusit sa participe la cateva emisiuni radio. Pe langa selectia de muzici pe care Vlaicu o ofera spre auditie in propria sa emisiune Underground Bucuresti, Vlaicu Golcea a aparut alaturi de Marta Hristea in mai multe cantari live pe la alte radiouri.

Printre piesele interpretate, de cele mai multe ori, piese in prima auditie, am retinut pentru voi explicatia pe care Vlaicu Golcea o are pentru drumul sau de la Jazz la Electro.. si invers.

"Am ajuns la jazz, pornind de la rock. Am ascultat rock prin liceu, destul de mult, cred ca am ajuns la jazz prin Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin si Floyd, dupa care am inceput sa ascult Mahavishnu Orchestra. Pe urma am ascultat ceva Ian Garbarek care mi-a deschis apetitul spre jazz. .Pe urma Miles Davis, Long si Coltrane

Primul proiect cu Sorin Romanescu, a fost acela cu Maria Raducanu, cand am scos discul "Pe Vale". Pornind de la conceptul acela de trio, voce chitara si contrabas am vrut sa facem ceva si mai special cu Marta Hristea si asa s-a nascut East Village. Astea au fost primele mari proiecte alaturi de Sorin Romanescu.
Alt proiect, dintre cele mai recente, Sukar Collectiv. Sukar a debutat ca o muzica, sa o numim, muzica remixata, pentru ca, au fost trase niste voci ale lui Napoleon, Tamango si Clasic, voci pe care artistii electro le-au remixat. Atunci cand s-a pus problema sa fie cantata live, a intervenit factorul uman si anume, Tamango si cu ceilalti, care nu au putut, nu au reusit super-explicabil, sa intre in ritm. In acest moment Sukar este prezentat sub mai multe nume, sa speram ce ne vom stabili la unul singur. Toate numele astea vin din nehotararea noastra in ceea ce priveste formula de concert Sukar Collective. Sukar este trupa lor de tigani, fara absolut nimic, Sukar Collective inseamna grupul mare, cu ei si cu noi si Sukar Sound Sistem inseamna Dj Vasile cu Handrabur(Nemos) si eventual Matze, un fel de DJ Set axat pe muzica Sukar Collective. Din cauza asta Sukar se prezinta in mai multe variante. Acum exista un album Sukar Colective, un prim single cu videoclip proaspat filmat. Videoclip filmat de catre regizorul filmului Furia, Radu Muntean, si se pare ca este foarte haios. Clipul, este o intalnire din Malademna o fata usor maturizata si prietenul ei care este obsedat de box, dar pana la urma, dragostea invinge iar cei doi se intalnesc pe ulita satului. Cam asta ar fi povestea clipului. Am iesit deja in cateva concerte cu Sukar. Am mers cu trupa mare si inca vreo 3,4 DJ seturi la festivaluri de muzica electronica in Franta si Belgia, iar concertul nostru a fost la cel mai mare festival de World Music din Europa, Sfinx se numeste, din Belgia si a fost nemaipomenit.



Nu stiu cum am ajuns sa ascult muzica electronica. Cred ca destul de importanta pentru mine a fost si intalnirea cu Cristi Stefanescu(Electric Brother), cu care, mai intai am fost prieten si apoi am inceput sa ascult si muzica placuta si ascultata de el. Cred ca pasul care ma apropiat cel mai mult de genul electro, a fost atunci cand am format trupa Aievea. L-am chemat pe Cri Stanciu(Matze) sa ne ajute cu drum machine la un concert Aievea, concert pe care il gandisem fara drum machine, si dupa aceea l-am chemat si pe Cristi Stefanescu, si cred ca de aici a plecat totul. Din Aievea mai face parte si Sorin Romanescu. Cu Sorin am cantate cu mult timp inainte si inca mai cant. Noi practic ne-am facut o mica enclava de muzicieni tineri de jazz, fiind cativa.. vreo 7, 8, si ne-am stors stilistic impreuna cantand in toate proiectele posibile, tot felul de muzici.

Un alt proiect pe care l-am pornit de ceva timp se numeste NoBo(No Borders), proiect ce ii cuprinde pe Rudy Teianu la voce, Ion Baciu Jr la pian, un saxofonist din Olanda Ferdy S cu care aici am scos un disc, acum 6 ani, se numea "From now on", un disc realizat cu Jazz Unit. Cu NoBo voi concerta in Noiembrie, la Paris la un festival de jazz. Este pacat ca muzica noastra nu reuseste sa ajunga si afara, asteptam, poate la anul, cine stie cand. Unul din discurile mele, la care Marta Hristea are un mare merit, discul se numeste "Pentru Nichita", si anume pentru Nichita Stanescu, a fost editat de casa de discuri a Institutului Francez din Bucuresti si acesta se pare ca va fi primul meu CD cu distruibutie internationala, se va gasi in toata Franta, prin reteaua de magazine FNAC. Sunt foarte curios, cum va merge."(Vlaicu Golcea interviu pentru Selectro octombrie 2004)

Aura Urziceanu - Biografie

Aura Urziceanu s-a născut ?®n anul 1946 şi a ?®nceput să studieze vioara ?®mpreună cu tatăl ei, profesor la o şcoală de muzică din Bucureşti, ?®ncă de la v?®rsta de 5 ani, iar să c?®nte, c?®nd avea 16 ani, ?®mpreună cu profesoara Florica Oraşcu. ???n 1969, după ce a fost premiată cu locul doi la Festivalul Naţional de la Mamaia, a plecat pentru o lungă perioadă ?®n Canada şi SUA, unde a apărut pe scenă alături de Duke Ellington şi Ella Fitzgerald. Aici ?®l ?®nt?®lneşte pe bateristul Ron Rully, cu care se căsătoreşte.

Re?®ntorc?®ndu-se pentru scurt timp acasă, ea reprezintă ?®n 1971 Rom??nia la Festivalul Internaţional de la Knokke din Belgia. Aici Aura c?®ştigă 'Cupa europeană' ?®mpreună cu echipa rom??nă, precum şi 'Cupa lumii', ?®ntr-un concurs extrem de dificil ?®mpotriva unei echipe americane. Deasemenea i se mai acordă şi 'Premiul presei' pentru cea mai bună interpretă a festivalului, iar din partea tuturor membrilor juriului a primit nota 10, ceea ce nu se mai ?®nt?®mplase ?®n ultimii 13 ani.

???n 1972 participă pentru prima oară la Festival de Jazz Newport de la New York, ?®mpreună cu Duke Ellington, unde este foarte bine primită de către critici şi presă.

Aura Urziceanu a c?®ntat ?®n turnee alături de Quincy Jones, Duke Ellinton, Thad Jones şi Mel Lewis şi a participat la festivaluri prestigioase precum Newport Jazz Festival, Village Vanguard sau Carnegie Hall. Totodată, ea a mai fost membră şi la 'The Symphony Orchestra'.

Aura Urziceanu a concertat din nou, dupa 12 ani, pe scena Salii Radio, duminica 24 octombrie, oferind publicului bucurestean un regal de jazz.
Concertul celebrei cantarete romance de jazz plecata de multi ani din Romania s-a desfasurat in cadrul Festivalului International de Jazz Bucuresti, eveniment ce s-a intins pe durata a zece zile. Sala in care a concertat solista a fost duminica seara plina pana la refuz de admiratorii si de iubitorii de jazz. ??€?Pentru mine a fost intoarcerea acasa; m-am intors ca in bratele mamei??€? a declarat presei Aura Urziceanu, marturisind totodata cu mare emotie: ??€?ma mandresc cu tara mea si cu romanii mei. Oriunde cant, eu ma prezint ca artist roman. Noi, romanii, suntem oameni binecuvantati, oameni frumosi si la suflet si la chip??€?. Programul artistic, indelung ovationat de publicul spectator, a inclus piese renumite din repertoriul lui Duke Ellington sau Thad Jones, compozitii proprii sau chiar inspirate din folclorul romanesc. Trupa alaturi de care solista romanca s-a aflat pe scena Salii Radio a fost compusa din Marius Popp (pian), Laurentiu Stefan (baterie), Marian Georgescu (chitara), Arthur Balog (contrabas), iar pe scena s-au mai aflat Big Band-ul Radio condus de de Ionel Tudor

Bio: Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Vaughan, The Divine One, was the singer of choice among boppers in the early 1940s. Her "legit" technique, sophisticated carriage -- her nickname was "Sassy" -- and sense of the infrastructure of popular songs reflected key values admired by the new breed of jazz musicians. She had operatic range and control, which she often emphasized in a grand way, and a crooning vibrato that echoed Billy Eckstine's. Her chops and style were imitated by nearly every singer who followed her.
Born in Newark, N.J., on March 27, 1924, Vaughan grew up singing in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and took piano and organ lessons. In 1943, she was hired by Earl Hines as a singer and pianist, after winning an amateur contest at the Apollo Theatre for singing "Body And Soul." The following year, she was with Eckstine, who had recommended her to Hines. After a short stint with John Kirby, she went solo. Her early sides for Musicraft, such as Tadd Dameron's "If You Could See Me Now" and "Tenderly" (her first hit) were among the hippest records of their day, championed by forward-thinking musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, with whom she recorded "Lover Man." Vaughan recorded Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" in 1944, under the title "Interlude."

While contracted to Columbia Records, from 1949-'54, Vaughan became an international star, recording mostly commercial albums, many of them backed by strings, though in 1950 she recorded with an octet that included Miles Davis. In the mid-'50s, she began to record jazz on the EmArcy label, producing two classic albums, Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown, and Swingin' Easy, with Richard Davis, Roy Haynes and others.

During her last period, Vaughan recorded for Pablo, producing two excellent albums of Duke Ellington songs. Dozens of her recordings remain in print. Though she disavowed being strictly a jazz singer, until her death on April 3,1990, in Los Angeles, Vaughan was a jewel in the triple crown of modern jazz vocalists, along with Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

In 1985, Vaughan was elected by the Readers into the Down Beat Hall of Fame.

Bio: Quincy Jones

As a musician, composer, arranger and bandleader, multi-Grammy award winning Quincy Jones has graced almost all facets of music with his midas touch in the last 50 years.
Born in Chicago on March 14, 1933, Jones moved to Seattle and played a number of gigs as a Clark Terry inspired trumpeter there before hooking up with Ray Charles, which would later become a life-long musical and personal friendship. He graduated for Seattle University and got his big break in Lionel Hampton big band, playing in the trumpet section with Art Farmer and Clifford Brown from 1951 to 1953. He later freelanced as an arranger and composer working with Dinah Washington, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Count Basie and many others. After working in Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra in 1956, he made his first sides as a leader for ABC-Paramount and several noteworthy jazz compositions including "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set." After a failed European tour in 1960, Jones became an A&R man for Mercury records, produced more recordings of own and worked on the Leslie Gore pop hit, "It's My Party." From the mid-'60s to the '80s, he scored many TV and film soundtracks, including The Pawnbroker, Roots and the Color Purple. During this fruitful period, he recorded several important r&b/jazz-fusion albums including Walking In Space, Gula Matari and Body Heat, which featured Milt Jackson, Hubert Laws and Ray Brown.

His production of Michael Jackson's Thriller was followed by his own mass-audience oriented recordings including The Dude, Back On The Block and Q's Jook Joint. But jazz lovers will remember his fateful recording with Miles Davis at the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival and they continue to look out for his next straightahead offerings.

Dianne Reeves, one of the pre-eminent jazz vocalists in the world today, was awarded the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for each of her last three recordings??€�a Grammy first in any vocal category.

Reeves??€� singing draws upon a world of influences; she is tied to a powerful storytelling instinct and her virtuosity and improvisational gifts are breathtaking. In 1987, Reeves was the first vocalist signed to the reactivated Blue Note/EMI label. As a result of her unique R&B and jazz stylings, Reeves has since captured a huge following and tremendous acclaim throughout the world.

Reeves has performed with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was the featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has also recorded and performed extensively with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Additionally, Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In this role Reeves had overseen the scheduling of jazz programming and educational workshops at both the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. An Ella Fitzgerald Award recipient, Reeves performed at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and appeared and sang on a season-ending episode of Sex and the City.

In late 2002, Reeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin) on her most recent Grammy-winning album, A Little Moonlight, an intimate and highly praised collection of ten standards featuring her touring trio (pianist Peter Martin, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Greg Hutchinson).

In late 2004, Dianne??€�s first holiday recording, Christmas Time is Here, was released to outstanding reviews. Said Ben Ratliff of The New York Times ??€?Ms. Reeves, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD's I've heard.??€?

Bio: Ray Charles

Famed R&B pianist Ray Charles was born Ray Charles Robinson in Albany, Ga. on September 23, 1930, at the height of the Depression. During his early years, Charles' impoverished family traveled throughout the Southeast in search of work, but when he was four Charles' vision began to deteriorate. By age seven he was blind, assigned to a special school in St. Augustine, Fla. where he studied music and math. At age 16 Charles left school to become a professional musician, playing wherever he could, struggling to survive. One day, fed up with Florida, he decided to travel as far away as possible and relocated to Seattle, Wash. In Seattle, Charles became a popular local talent, forming a Nat King Cole-inspired group in the late 1940s called the McSon Trio, with fellow musicians Gossady McGee and Milt Jarret.
During the reign of boxer "Sugar" Ray Robinson, Ray Charles Robinson shortenedhis name to Ray Charles to avoid confusing fans, but continued cutting records and performing throughout America, scoring his first minor hit with 1951's"Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand." The following year Charles signed to Atlantic Records and produced his first big hit with 1955's "I Got A Woman." Over the next few years Charles built a national following with his soulful voice and keyboard prowess, frequently collaborating with friend Quincy Jones as well as various jazz musicians.

After signing to ABC in 1959, Charles' career took off. He became one of thetop pop/R&B performers in North America, releasing No. 1 hits like "George" and "Born to Lose." In 1961 he formed his first big band, and later started his own recording studio, RPM. Charles freely switched between R&B, jazz, country androck, demonstrating his musical versatility while winning over new fans. During the Civil Rights movement, Charles was a friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,and participated in many civil rights marches. Despite his advancing age, Charles' talent remained undiminished, and he continued churning out records throughout the '60s, '70s, and '80s; today he is as popular as ever, performing to audiences worldwide.
