Innerstance.Beatbox
Your Eyes Are Like UFO's, My Darling
Consumers Research & Development Label 2005

01. Think Again
02. Hi-Sci
03. Theme From Bastard Squad
04. Bombing Interlude
05. Astor Street
06. This Is the Power
07. Helium Disco

un mini-album de vreo jumate de ora. asa, pentru gust.
"good times, textures, melodies, and scratched rhymes".
nici urma de mc, desi ultima piesa (si probabil cea mai tare)
baga un "get on up and dance everybody!"
care ar darama si ultimul perete.
altfel, 6 piese foarte bogate in sunet..
boom-bapuri, jazz, percutii faine
..si, evident, mult suflet, hehe...

03. No Solution
04. All Around [ft. Stefanie Bohm]
05. Thrashin

this little piece was floatin around soulseek
and being the burglar that i am, i snatched it up.
what a lucky find, cause it's only been released a month ago
on an obscure japanese label..

mr cooper was also part of the "mummy fortuna's theatre company"
out on lex records some time ago.
and this is his first solo record.

i can say that it's splendid.
when listening to it, i almost forget about the cold outside.
this album is perfect for those grey days
when you just wanna sit down
and warm up with a cup of tea.
nice stuff that you can chill to,
but it's not "chillout" crap.

just got this in my mailbox
and ripped for your stealing pleasure...

piano overlord is scott herren
aka prefuse73 aka savath & savalas aka delarosa & asora
whatever...

this is his first solo project on 'money studies',
the label representing turntablelab.com...
and it's quite a treat, gathering singles
and exclusive material released in 2 years time.
interestingly enough, the project originated by way of error,
specifically herren losing material that prevented him
from giving 'money studies' a promised diplo remix.
to compensate, herren created for the label
entirely new piano overlord material
using non-synthesized keyboards and drums,
though in a deliberately more restrained fashion
than his norm.

100% vintage beats 8)

it's hard to beat this description of innerstance.beatbox:
(from wobblyhead's website)
Man buys records.
Man listens to records.
Man grabs elements digitally from records.
Man twists sounds in his own image.
Man adds live instrumentation over the top.
Man scratches more records along to music.
Man presses "record."....
Man smiles effortlessly.

it's been done a million times before,
but very rarely is it done this well,
or with this much fucking nuance.

this is for all those people like me who have been waiting
to hear something other than madlib or jay dee (r.i.p).

this is some mostly instrumental shit with guitars and drums
that might make you cry and might make you see the beauty
in the other side of things.

ElekTro4
Keystroke One
Bully 2005

so i ripped another album. this one's a bit different: less elektronic (although the name wouldn't say so) and more on the sampladelic beats-and-fat-basslines side. plus scratches & weird vocal samples, to make it more entertaining. some touches of dub/reggae, some jazz, some acoustic guitar and piano... nothing too "out there" - just solid work from someone you need to get to know.

(note) the album is divided in two parts:

Part One: Portrait of the City [tracks 1-8]
Part Two: The Suicide Suite [tracks 9-15]

thanks to bumba for reminding me about this. ;)
i didn't quite enjoy it to the fullest until yesterday, when i had a new listen.
guess it went well with my mood and state of mind.

it's like i expected the last jel lp to be, but wasn't.
not that i dislike jel's, but this one's way more like a proper, mature concept album.
DOT:ALT review describes it best:
While everyone keeps a critical eye on the rest of the alt-hiphop scene, the folks at Endemik continue to quietly but surely and lovingly expand what can be done with the ancient genre. Here is the next instalment.

While a few will be familiar with SkyRider via the productions he contributed to Bleubird's album, the music on 47:34 will surprise even them. The man claims this record to be a document of the coma in which he spent ten days. And while this is a subject that has been touched on before ??€ most notoriously by The Mars Volta on their debut LP ??€ the experience has never been described so believably.

The songs on this record are loose and downbeat, but their sound is impossible to classify with a one-word genre definition. They're awry pieces of post-hiphop production, minimal but still held together by subtle melodies from samples and a plethora of live instruments. They veer between folksy, psychedelic and orchestral, often occupying all three positions at once. The tracks flow in and out of one another in an incredibly hallucinogenic way ??€ it's chilling. The only real parallel to what has been done here can be drawn with Pilot Balloon's album ??€ both possess a deceptive minimalism, but hide countless layers of complexity and arrhythmic detail that make their tracks incredibly involving.

Though DOT:ALT does not indorse engaging in recreational comatose behaviour, we do highly recommend that you experience the closest recorded alternative to date.
any of you fuckers find the japanese (incl. bonus remixes) 2006 version, let me know.

Eliot Lipp
S/T
EastDev 2004

01. Beverly Rhode
02. Deep
03. Botched
04. Next Beat
05. Gordo
06. Cashed
07. Neutral
08. One Knot
09. Ballkid
10. Abercrombie & Pitch
11. Like No Tomorrow
12. Linc

Eliot Lipp's self-titled solo debut sounds like what might happen if some of post-rock's elders received a healthy dose of hip-hop funk and pledged their undying devotion to the Sequential Circuits Six-Trak synthesizer. You can almost deduce this yourself, as the productions gleam with imperfections, but are balanced by rock solid drum programming. Lipp is something of a newcomer, and his instrumental work shows much promise thanks to his ear for solid grooves and his attention to diversity of sound, which includes everything from straight-up hip-hop beats (Deep) to guitar-based head-nodders (One Knot). Be sure to check out the summery, Latin-tinged Gordo and the laidback sound collage Ballkid.

Ricci Rucker & Mike Boo

05. Louie Lopez
06. Junglistic Beats Make a Nigga Hyperactive

16. Junkyard Smobbin [ft. Excess]
17. Listen [ft. D-Styles]
18. Homeless in New York
19. Signing Off
20. In Other Words, Don't Sleep...

While most people might still think scratching is limited to battles like DMC and DJs laying down cuts on tracks, the turntablist scene has nicely hopped along in the last 5+ years moving away from battles and the hip hop roots of the artform towards a more musical approach to making music using turntables, which has been referred to as scratch music. But labels aside, this way of making music is still in its infant stages, even if the tablist artform has been around for well over a decade. D-Styles offered the world the first all scratched LP, Phantazmagorea, followed a few years later by Ricci Rucker and Mike Boo's Scetchbook. Using nothing more than a turntable, a mixer, a multi-track recording program and an abundance of records, the album was fully composed by scratching individual instruments: kick drums, snares, percussion sounds, leads, bass lines, solos, etc. "We were just trying to prove a point: that other themes can be made with scratching by jumping from theme-to-theme."
