Freestyle Friday - The LOX & DJ Premier

Image

No doubt some wiseguy is sure to complain that most of these ??€?aren??€t off the top of the dome??€?.[1] Other than being the most annoying mixtape guy of all-time, DJ Clue had his moments, especially when it came to spotlighting street-level up-and-comers like The LOX, who were capable of some pretty nice shit in their younger days [2] The other problem with these guys is that they often have awful taste in beats, so when you get to hear them over something dope [3] it really stands out. Plus I keep reading about how gully Sheek Louch is, if that matters to anyone.

Here are a couple of good examples of how D-Block used to get down, over Primo??€s ??€?Next Level??€? Nyte Time Remix4 for the ??€?Chest 2 Chest Freestyle??€? and then rocking over Gangstarr??€s ??€?You Know My Steez??€? beat. Sadly, Clue still feels the need to yell his name out periodically, but what can you do?5

P.S.: XXL Mag can??€t see me when it comes to my footnote game.6

DJ Clue featuring The LOX - Chest 2 Chest Freestyle

DJ Clue featuring The LOX - Primo Freestyle

1. The definition of ??€?freestyle??€? is something that nobody has given a shit about for the past ten years, but it was once a hotly-contested issue as to whether or not you had to improvise to call it a freestyle. My answer to that is: It??€s not called ??€?Top Of The Dome Friday??€?, now is it?

2. Not that they can??€t hang today, but their albums are always pretty shitty and I still haven??€t forgiven then for guesting on ??€?Jenny On The Block??€? and that horrible Mariah shit.

3. Such as Alchemist??€s ??€?We Gon??€ Make It??€? or Premier??€s ??€?Don??€t None of Y??€all Better??€? from the first Jadakiss LP.

4. Show & AG??€s awesome first single from the ??€?Goodfellas??€? album.

5. Well, if you??€re name??€s DJ Kay Slay you put him in a yoke.

6. Although Kris Ex pioneered that shit, I??€m making it official - none of that square brackets nonsense over here.

Elzhi + I'm a Wadeness + Click the Ads. Elzhi - Concrete Eyes

One of my favorite emcees is Slum Village's Elzhi. Anyone who has heard the verse he spit on "Hiding Place" off of Little Brother's The Minstrel Show knows how fuckin nice Elzhi is. Elzhi also blessed the underrated Slum Village LP, especially "Giant" with his precise flow combined with witty lyrics. This track here is about being the eyes of the street, as Elzhi plays lyrical storyteller on the block. The sound quality isn't perfect, that's because it's a pretty old song taken off a mixtape. The production is classic Detroit shit, I'm not sure who is behind the boards, but with the hard drums, it kind reminds me of Dilla. I won't say it is because I'm not sure, but if you take one listen you'd understand why I think Dilla might be the producer of this hot fiyah track. Elzhi is a lyricist's favorite lyricist, and I'm praying he got an official solo LP on the way.

Next topic at hand is the ridiculous play of Dwayne Wade. They have the "I'm a Witness" campaign for Lebron James (  ), but now it's time for the "I'm a Wadeness". With his acrobatic plays, silky shots, Dwayne Wade is hitting a ridiculous stride in only his 3rd year. While Shaq played well all year, Dwayne Wade is the reason they are this far in the playoffs. He beat the Pistons with an IV In his arm with the flu, that's real gangster shit. I predict Miami to win the championship, no matter who they play. hehe...!

The Audience's Listening To Cut Chemist

Image

Cut Chemist - "The Garden"
Cut Chemist ft/ Edan, Mr. Lif - "Storm"
The Audience's Listening, album release date July 11, 2006

"They say you get as long as you need to make your first album, but the second one you get a year!" - Cut Chemist

According to Billboard Magazine, it took Cut Chemist one year to clear all samples -"sometimes you have to remind them what their song is"- used on The Audience's Listening (way clever album title). Chemist sacrificed his role with Jurassic 5 to concentrate -"it's easy for me to get distracted"- on an album that Warner Brothers and fans have anticipated for two years. Using resources and influnence like his name is Jerry Wexler, Chemist utilized 24-months to craft a barrel of songs and cut that barrel to a dozen songs that Warner Brothers will push in July.

If passport stamps were pussy Chemist would be a pimp, instead the cat is a globetrotting record collector I wanted it to be that way, to kind of give it a texture of, 'Hey, I go all over the world and buy records! - that put time in Brazil to create "The Garden," a song fueled by authentic Brazilian sounds. "The Garden" is a marked summer anthem that will get spins from alpha-hipsters to middle-aged wives. Beautiful vocals from Astrud Gilberto (note: Ear Fuzz tigercats, please tell me what A. Gilberto sample that was) sex up "The Garden." Fantastic arrangement page-marks Chemist as an elite member of the same people who have their names printed on Chemist's records.

The Documentary

B+ and Eric Coleman produce today's next producers (J Rocc, Babu, Nuts, Cut Chemist and Madlib) with time-stamped drummers (Paul Humphery, Derf Reklaw and James Gadson) to document a team of intelligent musicians. The video footage is from Brasilintime: Batucada Com Discos, a documentary that began in `02 and is coming out this summer. Look at the all-star team  of Brasilintime.

"Light gay bossa nova." (This is the video link for Windows users)

"Storm" is electro-swayzee-rap to the max. Edan and Mr. Lif bring raw intelligent rap to "Storm" and Chemist's production is bound to make hipsters dance with their Cherrios. At 3:28 "Storm" is short and it's OK, because this jacked-up Jurassic 5 beat is like tight denim on Vivica Fox. "Storm" is vintage Chemist -the man who conitues to play Saturday nights at Hollywood's Star Shoes- and his keen production on "Storm" demonstrates Chemist's relevant time with Jurassic 5.

Ultramagnetic Demos

Image

A little something passed on to me from Ross F:

I was just reading you??€re Ultra reunion post and thought you might be interested in something I acquired from eBay recently: A demo EP with the four tracks ??€?(NYC Critic) Mix It Down??€?, ??€?Baby I??€m Mad??€?, ??€?Make It Rain??€? and ??€?Who I Am??€?.

The seller had a record company that Ultra??€s management had sent it to last year. Unfortunately his company could not afford their demands.

Apparently two of the songs saw a release a few years back:

Image

Make It Rain / Mix It Down (Oxygen Music Works, 2001)

I never saw or heard that Oxygen single, so I can??€t tell if these are same versions but ??€?Make It Rain??€? and ??€?Baby I??€m Mad??€? sound more like typical Kool Keith solo tracks featuring Ced Gee rather than classic Ultra material, and ??€?(NYC Critic) Mix It Down??€? reminds me of a song from that Big Time album that Keith did with Tim Dog. ??€?Who Am I??€? is easily the best track, with a James Brown vocal on the hook and Delta Force One (??€?or should I say Ced Tyson??€?) kicks his own demented version of the ??€?Broken Language??€? style.

Ultramagnetic MC??€s - Who I Am

Ultramagnetic MC??€s - (NYC Critic) Mix It Down

If that doesn??€t move ya, then check the fellas fighting off skeezoids in this bugged-out clip for ??€?Travelling At The Speed Of Thought (Remix)??€?:

Freestyle Friday - DITC & Tony Touch

Image

The 50 MC??€s series built on Doo Wop??€s ??€?95 Live Intros but kept the freestyles going for the whole tape. After compiling three volumes worth (that??€s 150 rappers for all you matheletes out there) for the original cassettes, selections from each volume also made it onto vinyl, as the first edition was a 2LP white label, Power Cypher 2 & 3 were single albums complete with picture covers. For the complete collection, track down the six-CD box set that Toca relelased a couple of years back.

As O.C., Fat Joe, Lord Finesse, AG & Diamond D all do their thing over popular beats of the time (around ??€?96), I??€m reminded of just how underwhelming the Diggin??€ In The Crates album was when it was finally released a few years later, especially after the promise demonstrated on ??€?Day One??€?. Expectations are a bitch, huh?

Doo Wop - Best DJ On the Mic?

ImageImage

Apparently there are at least four remixes of Busta Rhyme's New York Shit, but this version is better than any of them. Kid Capri enlisted the Bouncemaster Doo Wop to remake the song from the mixtape angle, in the same way that Wop did his "10 Tape Commandments". This works because despite being known primarily as a mixtape DJ, Doo Wop is one hell of a rapper, as tracks like "G??€z Up" with Tony Touch have demonstrated (not to mention his old songs like "Hit 'Em In The Head"). I would prefer to hear Kid Capri, Tony Toca and Doo Wop on the mic than Busta and his pals anyday of the week. I just hope Jazzy Jay is a getting cheque [1] out of all this, since he??€s the one that gave the record to Diamond D to use for "I Went For Mine" in the first place.

Una mostra para los latinos:

New Premier Heat / Nas Speaks The Truth

Image

A new single due to hit the shelves next month demonstrates an impressive verbal display from Termanology, who basically destroys [1] this solid (if hardly unusual) violin-laced DJ Premier track. An M.O.P scratch on the hook always helps as well. [2]

Termanology - Watch How It Go Down [St./Showoff/Brick, 2006] [3]

I??€m old fashioned, I believe diamonds don??€t belong in the ears of guys - Nas, 2006.

Hold ya head Fab.

2. Which could use louder drums??€¦
3. I ripped this at 64kps since it??€s not even out yet.
